I remember reading somewhere that "Display is a function of state" is the core of react. That along with Virtual DOM are what separates React from others.

Until react came on the scene I was not very much interested in the UI. It was the interfaces of platforms like Jira - https://blog.developer.atlassian.com/react-is-an-exciting-future/ which re-triggered my curiosity in front-end.
