I ended up building LearnAwesome dot org with exactly this idea. Open-source and compliant with various standards like ActivityPub, RSS, LRMI Schema etc. I have also added a browser extension, a mobile app, a complete system for flashcard practice with spaced-repetition, social media integration. LearnAwesome also supports importing external recommendations. For eg: If Bill Gates recommends Sapiens highly, that fact will be available in the knowledge graph. Users can follow topics, other users, create groups and build collections - and show any of this on their own website.
