Amazon is in short everything as a service. Find a problem statement, get solutions to that, optimise it, make it modular, make it cost effective and make it repeatable and then create it as a service for others to consume. In fact that is how aws came into being and aws is a major source of contribution for the revenue and profits today.
AWS was able to leverage everything they started working on very early and that kind of gives them the leverage which others are only trying to catch up to.
